Museo del Ron y la Caña aka Museum of Rum and Sugar Cane

Located within a 16th century historical building in the heart of Santo Domingo’s colonial zone is one of the country’s newest museums. Museo del Ron y la Caña, or Museum of Rum and Sugar Cane as its name translates from Spanish was only opened in late 2008 but is already gaining notoriety among the fans and appreciators of quality spirit around the world.

A Museum with a Bar

Disregarding massive tourism boom of the past few decades, the Dominican Republic’s economy has focused on exports ever since first European settlers started with colonization. Two of those exports famously included sugar cane and rum. To ensure their places in Dominican history, a museum was created.

Museo del Ron y la Caña Features

The Museum of Rum and Sugar Cane presents the highlights of the events involving rum and sugar cane that shaped the history of the Dominican Republic, from slavery to their eventual importance to the country’s economy. The museum exhibits articles that were traditionally used in production of rum and harvesting of sugar cane, including farming plows, a bronze stove and a rum still. Historical pictures of los roneros (rum workers), and old casks still filled with Dominican rum make you feel like you were just taken back in time.

True to its origins, the museum sells reasonably priced bottled rum at its entrance and grows sugar cane on an open patio. World renown Dominican Rum can also be savored at the bar inside the museum.

Museo del Ron y la Caña Location

The museum is in the capital’s tourism area, the Colonial Zone, inside a converted 16th century building in Santo Domingo. The street address is Isabel la Catolica #261. There is no entrance fee so you can pop in and enjoy the story of rum making and sugar cane harvesting in the Dominican Republic for free.

Hello. I stopped by your museum, but it was closed until 7PM. Unfortunately, I was traveling back to my country. Could you send me some information on the museum. Thank you.
